Controlling What We Can & Letting Go of the Rest
As we step into the final days of the year and the holiday season begins to weave its warmth, a timeless truth becomes clear: while the world around us is often out of our control, our thoughts and actions remain entirely our own. Like a whirlwind that spins and shifts, the noise of circumstances—politics, opinions, unexpected turns—surrounds us. Yet, within our minds and hearts, we hold the power to choose what moves us and what we let go of.
Consider this: there is good in every person we meet. It may not always be obvious—our complex human nature often shrouds it in fear, ambition, or past wounds. But to seek out what unites us, to discover even a tiny spark of common ground, is a courageous act. Letting go of the need for others to think as we do creates room to see their hopes and humanity. When we open ourselves to compassion and extend simple acts of kindness, we can spark change far greater than we may imagine.
Holding on to our differences and grievances weighs us down. Anger, resentment, and division keep us tethered to suffering. But choosing to release them is a gift to ourselves and others—it opens the door to freedom and joy. Extend grace to those who falter, just as you would hope for understanding during your struggles. In kindness, there is strength; in empathy, a bridge over divides.
As the holiday season wraps us in its traditions and togetherness, let us be the ones to foster warmth and understanding. Speak words of kindness instead of division, and where you can create moments of connection and light. The smallest gesture—a thoughtful word, a listening ear—can be a balm to the weary spirit. We cannot control the twists and turns of life, but we can choose to walk our path with courage, compassion, and purpose. In doing so, we become a source of light and hope for those around us—and for ourselves.
