What is Reiki?
The term Reiki is actually a combination of Japanese and Chinese characters. “Rei” refers to spiritual or supernatural and “ki” refers to vital energy. One of the main points of those that practice reiki is that vital energy can actually be channeled to help the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It is also referred to as palm healing or hands on body healing.
In recent years the practice of reiki has been integrated into many health care settings. As the push to treat the whole person, and not just the ailment gains momentum, reiki practitioners find an ever growing client base.
No one really knows for sure how reiki works. What is known is that in many cases, reiki reduces anxiety and stress, puts clients at ease, and has been reported to ease pain.
During a reiki session, the practitioner places her hands over the client, usually starting at the head, and focusing on the seven energy centers or Chakras in the body. It is believed that the energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to the client in an attempt to balance the energy centers. If each chakra is balanced and unblocked, the energy can run through the body which allows all related organs to be healthy as well. Many report feeling an intense heat and energy during this process.
Some feel that reiki is related to electromagnetic-type energy that interacts with a person’s electromagnetic field. Another theory is that it promotes relaxation which in turn lowers a person’s stress and helps to promote healing.
All in all, reiki does not have deep rooted scientific proof one way or the other. Those that practice the art and those that feel they receive positive benefits from the reiki just know that it works for them.
